Gas4Sea* has been selected by Norwegian energy group Statoil for the supply of LNG as a marine fuel of four crude shuttle tankers in the port of Rotterdam. These four planned dual fuel vessels are to come into service in early 2020; they will be operated by Statoil in Northern European seas – North Sea, Norwegian sea and Barents sea.

Gas4Sea will supply LNG using the ENGIE Zeebrugge which started operations earlier this year. The 5,000 m3 capacity vessel is currently performing regular ship-to-ship LNG bunkering services in the port of Zeebrugge. This experience in establishing a first ship-to-ship bunkering chain certainly weighed in Statoil’s decision.

This is a very positive step in Gas4Sea’s customer portfolio development, which now includes a robust and long lasting counterparty such as Statoil. It also illustrates the ability of our LNG Bunkering Vessel to serve different types of customers and vessels – car carriers today, crude shuttles tomorrow, and others later on – as well as to operate not only in Zeebrugge, but in the whole area.

Nowadays, 50% of the ordered LNG-fueled ships are destined to operate in the European Market. And a combination of more stringent environmental regulation and high commercial marine bunkering activity is to make ARA (Amsterdam Rotterdam Antwerp) a key region for LNG bunkering. By choosing to diversify the areas in which it can operate in Northern Europe, Gas4Sea maximises its chances to expand rapidly, while targeting in parallel to extend its services to areas well beyond.
