The Moscow Urban Forum, the biggest international congress on the development challenges of world megacities, was held at Moscow on July 6-7.

Since its first edition in 2011, this Forum has been bringing together representatives of city administrations from Russia and around the world, architects, urban planners, developers, directors, investors, startups, journalists and citizens.

This year, ENGIE was represented by Gérard Mestrallet, Etienne Jacolin (CEO of the NECST BU), Olivier Biancarelli (Managing Director, BtoT), Laurent Bouillot (CEO, Siradel, subsidiary of ENGIE) and Benjamin La Joie (International Department).

On July 7 in Moscow (Russia), Gérard Mestrallet spoke about the role of major industrial groups in the development of metropoles during the plenary session “The age of agglomerations. Strategy of Russia” alongside the Mayor of Moscow Sergueï Sobianine.

There exists a true complementarity between cities and businesses. Our ambition is to be a partner for major cities by taking into consideration some key factors: the introduction of a long-term relationship, better energy efficiency and proven environmental gains while respecting the philosophy of public-private partnerships. We propose, the city decides and we act”.

The Moscow Urban Forum also enabled SIRADEL, a subsidiary of ENGIE, to debate the use of data in urban management during a round table with MIT, CISCO, Tomtom and the Director of the Information Technology Department of the City of Moscow.

2019 is an important date because it will mark the commissioning of 5G: a new network system in which data will be combined in real time, requiring worldwide standardization for local applications. This revolution also raises the question of the processing of confidential data locally and in real time.

The Forum: 2 days of exchanges on urban policies

This year, the Forum gathered more than 60 speakers and hosted 40 stands and pavilions, with Russian and international businesses. The attending businesses included international groups such as CISCO, Renaissance and Tashir and this year Russian entities in charge of the new urban policy of Moscow and other Russian cities had a high profile.

This Forum was the opportunity for the ENGIE delegation to meet the actors involved in urban policies within Russia and to witness their dynamism. The Group also presented its expertise in urban transformation. With SIRADEL, the group’s know-how in the development of smart cities was fully showcased.

For the record, in 2011, the city of Moscow launched the ambitious project “Greater Moscow”, inspired by the “Greater Paris“ project, which, according to Maurice Leroy, has already outstripped “Greater Paris“ in speed of execution.

  • Addition of the “New Moscow” territory: multiplication of the surface area by 2.5 (+160,000 ha), making Moscow the 6th largest city in the world,
  • Growth of the agglomeration, which concentrates ¼ of Russian GDP and nearly 10% of the country’s population (12 million inhabitants, 14 million inhabitants forecast for 2025),
  • 100 billion euros over 30 years to be invested in the economy, building, transport and energy.
