News

From 4 to 7 April, we participate to Gastech 2017 in Tokyo, Japan, the world’s leading gas and LNG event. It enables over 25,000 commercial experts and technical innovators from the up, mid and downstream sectors of the supply chain to discover business-changing insights, explore innovative solutions and build profitable business connections.

The four-day, multi-streamed conference program will reflect the business-critical needs of the international gas and LNG market, featuring 200 speakers and hosting over 2,500 international delegates representing the entire value chain.

Japan, the number one LNG importer in the world

Japan is the number one LNG importer in the world. It increases installed PV capacity in 2015 by +10GW, and there has been a decrease in energy intensity -2%/yr since 2000.

Under the Strategic Energy Plan of Japan, the country intends to supply 10% of its primary energy from renewables by 2020. It also intends to target 30% of energy savings by 2030 compared to 2003. The Nuclear target is 20 -22% of power mix by 2030. The renewables capacity has also grown substantially in recent years, especially PV: the country ranks third in the world in terms of PV installed capacity.

In 2015, the Ministry Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced plans to invest Yen 93bn (USD 779m) to finance the implementation of energy efficiency devices, such as LED lamps or high-efficiency boilers by SMEs and industries.

METI decided to cut the tariff for solar power to reflect declining prices of solar facilities. The Feed-in Tariffs (FITS) have been reduced several times since 2013. The latest reduction took place in April 2016, when they dropped from Yen 27/kWh (USD 24C/kWh) to Yen 24/kWh (USD 21C/kWh).

Energy consumption per capita decreased from 4.1 toe in 2006 to 3.4 toe in 2015, nearly reaching EU-level (3.1 toe).

The gas for our Group: a key enabler of the energy transition

Gas infrastructure and new gas solutions will be pillars of the energy transition. They will provide a flexible and efficient response to the challenges of renewable energy integration, sustainable mobility, air quality and energy access. ENGIE’s vast know-how and its new partnership approach being developed through Key Programs will enable it to develop its gas footprint worldwide.

Our key figures in gas:

  • 1st distribution network in Europe
  • 2nd largest operator of LNG terminals in Europe
  • 2nd transmission network in Europe
  • 3rd gas storage in the world
